On July 24, stakeholders, development partners, and civil society organisations gathered virtually to witness the official launch of the Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) Performance Leaderboard— an innovative tool designed to assess and strengthen inclusive governance across Nigeria’s sub-national governments.
The launch event, held in collaboration with Christian Aid in Nigeria, ActionAid Nigeria, Hope Alive for Possibilities Initiative (HAPI), Voice of Women Empowerment Foundation, and the Gender Advocacy Movement for the Environment (GAME), brought together diverse voices committed to advancing gender-responsive and inclusive governance in Nigeria.
The GESI Performance Leaderboard will serve as a monitoring and accountability mechanism, ranking government efforts in integrating inclusivity into governance structures. With a specific focus on women, youth, and persons with disabilities (PWDs), the tool is expected to highlight progress, identify gaps, and encourage healthy competition among states to adopt more inclusive policies and practices.
During the event, speakers emphasized the urgent need for Nigeria’s governance systems to reflect the realities of its diverse population. They noted that the leaderboard is not only a scorecard but also a call to action—urging sub-national governments to prioritize gender equality and social inclusion as fundamental pillars of good governance.
The launch concluded with a strong commitment from partners to use the findings from the GESI Performance Leaderboard as an advocacy tool for systemic change. By tracking progress and amplifying accountability, the initiative aims to inspire a culture of inclusion that ensures no one is left behind.
